Shane Sutton

A ‘Spacer’ walks to the future.

In this hypnotic audio and visual piece the artist makes reference to real and virtual spaces, and how we are advancing with new platforms, technologies, and tools for artists and creative thinkers over one hundred years after Edweard Muybridge’s early studies with motion and photography. Shane’s Spacer Street Art was originally developed from a collection of astronaut oil paintings entitled ‘That Space in between’, which the artist describes as exploring that moment after you leave, but before you get there. It explores the implications of making a choice and not knowing the outcome.

Running time: 5 minutes, 12 seconds

Shane started painting murals in the early nineties but then swapped his brush for computers to teach himself graphic design and motion graphics. A few years later he would make an independent documentary film that would go on to win 9 international film festival awards and earn him a nomination for his creative editing at the Irish Film and Television Awards. With a diverse range of skills Shane’s work changes from oil on canvas to digital work and street art, but he is probably best known for his ‘Spacer’ astronauts. In 2019 he was selected for an art residency with the European Space Agency UK Climate Office, producing a number of paintings that were exhibited at the Living Planet Symposium in Milan 2019. On March 1st 2019, he became the first street artist to sign his work in weightlessness in zero gravity.
