Soil in Action

Wim van Egmond

Soil in Action takes time-lapse footage from underground cameras to demonstrate the extraordinary workings of the earth.

Seeds germinate, cuttings mulch, and the delicate cycle of life continues. Portraying microbes and making micro landscapes, this collection of videos is an invitation to wonder, and to discover more. Soil in Action is a collaboration with soil ecologist Prof. Dr. Gerlinde De Deyn, from Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands.

Dutch artist Wim van Egmond’s art lies deceptively close to science. Fascinated by the sometimes almost artificial way that science depicts nature, he studied painting and specialised in photography using optical techniques such as microscopy. He combines the skills of 19th century naturalists with modern digital techniques, and regularly collaborates with scientists. In recent years, he has developed techniques to create unique movies and images of fungi and other soil organisms.
